Struggling for space in their Victorian home, Ann Watkinson and her partner Melise Jones moved into a larger – but uglier – Seventies chalet bungalow nearby in Sheffield.

They had the vision that they could transform the house into their dream home but a major over hall was needed.

The old pantile roof was replaced with modern dark grey concrete tiles, and the plastic windows and doors with black aluminium-framed versions, made by Mayfayre Aluminium Systems. A huge window was installed at the end of the hallway, behind the stairs, which allows views straight through the house and out into the garden.

Larch cladding was fitted around the front door, which extends upwards and sideways to form external window blinds to the WC and en suite bathroom. A dormer window at the rear has been replaced with a rooflight, which gives far more privacy and means the client is no longer overlooking the neighbours.
